Srinagar, Sept 17: Residents of Usmanabad in Shalteng area of Srinagar are up in arms against Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) after a series of complaints related to drainage overflows and waterlogging in the area fell on their deaf ears.
The residents said since the rainfall last week three lanes- lane 1, 2 and 3- are waterlogged and its has become difficult for them to come out of their homes.
At least 200 residential houses are located in the area and all the lanes leading to theses houses have been blocked by rainwater.
“A flood like situation is prevailing in our area. Streets are filled to the brim and water will enter our houses in case of more rains. The drainage has completely failed. No dewatering has been carried by the SMC yet despite our repeated requests,” said a resident Noor Mohammad.
He said the residents have to remove their shoes and raise their trousers upto knees to wade through the water logged streets to reach the main road or the market.
“School children, patients, and elders face lot of trouble due to flooded streets. Water borne disease will soon spread in the area if the authorities don’t take immediate action,” the residents said.
SMC Commissioner, Dr GN Qasba, said he will send a drainage division team to the spot and ensure the dewatering of the lanes as soon as possible.
