Khan seeks establishment of committee on sexual harassment

Srinagar, July 28: The Chairperson of District Development Council (DDC), Budgam, Nazir Ahmad Khan has sought the establishment of an Internal Complaints Committee as per the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2013 also known as POSH Act in offices across the district.
The development has come after a representation was submitted by an advocate, seeking the setting up of the same in various Government as well as Private Offices.
“Undersigned has been receiving complaints, messages, calls from numerous individuals of district Budgam regarding non–establishment of sexual harassment committees across private and public offices such as coaching centers, schools, Govt offices, etc,” reads the representation.
The advocate has further stated that sexual harassment in the workplace can only be reduced through the establishment of sexual harassment committees which is the mandate of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act.
“In this regard, I am submitting this representation with the hope that your good office will take note of the matter and forward the same to concerned offices of District Budgam both private, and public offices, and will ensure Sexual Harassment Committees are constituted across all offices to ensure the safety of women and principles of Gender Equality.”
In response to the representation, the DDC Chairperson of the district has written to Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, Senior Superintendent of Police, Budgam, Additional District Development Commissioner, Budgam, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, Chief Planning Officer, Budgam, Chief Education Officer, Budgam, Assistant Commissioner, Panchayat, Budgam, Assistant Commissioner, Development, Budgam, Sub Divisional Magistrates Tehsildars, and BDOs, seeking necessary action.
“Undersigned has received a copy of representation from Mr. Badrul Duja, Advocate regarding the subject… I am forwarding the aforesaid representation to you for consideration and further necessary action in the matter.”
