BARAMULLA, Sept 22: The pathetic condition of a 4-kilometer Baramulla-Singhpora-Uplana link road has put thousands of residents of atleast dozen surrounding villages to hardship.
Villagers said the Government has not repaired the road for the last seven years after a portion of it was macadamized in 2006. The villagers said they have approached every administrator concerned in the district, but their pleas have fallen to deaf ears.
Apprehending huge damages to their vehicles, local transporters have withdrawn their service.
School children, patients and elders have to face difficult time while walking or travelling on this road in jampacked minibuses that run partially on the road.
“It takes villagers hours to carry the patients to nearby town, where from they avail the vehicle service. We have no other option but to carry our fruit boxes on shoulders, walk long distances through the slushy stretch,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, Khawaja Ghulam Ahmad cited paucity of funds for not repairing this link road and in the same breath blamed Public Works Department (PWD) for bad condition of the roads in the district.
“We can’t macadamize the full link roads as it needs crores of rupees, but filling of pot-holes is the responsibility of the PWD,” he said.
He also added it was difficult to maintain the quality of roads here due to heavy snow fall in the winters, which defaces the topping of the roads.
