Curfew lifted in Shopian

Srinagar, Sept 22: Authorities today lifted curfew from Shopian in South Kashmir after 11 days following improvement in the situation.
However, life remained crippled as business and other establishments were closed and traffic was also off the roads. The Civil Society, traders and transporters of Shopian held a meeting last evening in Shopian in which they called for indefinite strike in the town over the killings of 5 youth.
They are demanding registering of an FIR against CRPF, shifting of the camp from Gagran saying that it is not safe for the general public and exgratia relief for the dead.
The restrictions were imposed in Shopian on September 11 following the killing of a school bus driver in security force firing during demonstration in protest against the death of four people allegedly in CRPF firing on September 7.
Police confirmed that one of the deceased persons was a militant of Laskhar-e-Toiba (LeT) Abdullah Haroon. However, locals refuted police claim and a former Minister and local Congress leader said that he was a labourer.
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik was detained by police near Pampore in South Kashmir. He was on his way to Shopian with four truck loads of relief. However, the relief reached Shopian and it was distributed in the township.
Scores of youth this evening clashed with police at Arhama Fruit complex after they forced people working in fruit mandi to stop their work. Police reached the spot and chased them away leading to clashes.
In the meantime, protests were reported from Baramulla town in North Kashmir following the arrest of 5 persons on charges of stone pelting.
