FRANKFURT: Hostilities and barbaric incidents on the LoC are a major concern to India though the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is willing to talk with his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif on ‘all issues’ when they meet in New York on September 29.
The summit cannot be termed as ‘starting of composite dialogue’ or ‘Comprehensive dialogues’, highly placed sources who confirmed the meeting told reporters.
‘Nothing could be commented right now’, the sources said.
When asked whether the New York talks could be termed as ‘peace talks’, the sources replied: ‘Peace talks are held with enemies and not with friends.’
Replying to a question about the talks agenda, the sources said that exact details would be known later as ‘things are being worked out’, they said.
According to present indications, besides terrorism, trade and economic cooperation will figure prominently in the discussions which would take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
Other issues like Kashmir, Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and Pakistan’s prisoners in Indian jails may also come up.
Sources said talks were under way between the two countries for power and gas deals ‘purely on commercial level’ since Pakistan is in the grip of an acute power shortage with even the capital, Islamabad, experiencing power outages.
The situation in Afghanistan, an issue of mutual concern, is also likely to come up in the Singh-Sharif talks in the context of US plans to withdraw or scale down the NATO troops in the war torn country. (AGENCIES)
