3 rescued by IAF chopper from Ujh

JAMMU, Aug 16: Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was suspended for more than ten hours after land-slide in Mehar and Cafeteria area of Ramban while two cars were washed away in flash flood in Samba and Purmandal area on Monday morning.
Reports said that due to heavy rain in Ramban sector, the land slide took place at Mehar and Cafeteria Morh during early morning hours on Monday. A large number of vehicles remained stranded on the highway for about ten hours. The road could be restored in the afternoon. The smooth movement of traffic was witnessed on Tuesday.
Due to heavy rain Kathua and Samba area two cars were washed away while massive land erosion took place at the banks of river Ujh on Monday. Three persons were rescued from Ujh river by the IAF chopper while at least have a dozen houses/ Kullahs of Gujjars were also partially damaged in Marheen and Khandwal area.
An Alto car washed away in Kharha Madana area of Purmandal Block while another vehicle (Maruti Eeco), was washed away in flash flood in a Nallah on Sumb road in Samba district. However, all the occupants were saved by the locals. A truck was also turned turtle in flooded Nallah at Nud on Monday morning. The driver and helper jumped away to safety. Samba –Mansar road was also blocked for five hours.
Reports from Kathua said that due to massive flood in Ujh river, land erosion took place at Shabbe Chak, Ghati Jhang, Khandwal and other low lying areas on Monday. The river was flowing near danger mark and bunds were damaged at 2-3 places and flood water entered several paddy fields causing damage to the standing crop in district Kathua. Flood in Tarnah, Basantar and Devak rivers also caused land erosion and damage to the crops.
Reports from Reasi said that Reasi-Mahore road remained blocked for 3-4 hours on Monday after land slide at two places. Chopper service to Mata Vaishnodevi shrine from Katra base camp also remained suspended due to bad weather on Monday and partially on Tuesday.
