ACB arrests SMC Ward Officer for taking bribe

Srinagar, Aug 20: The Anti Corruption Bureau today arrested a Ward Officer of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for bribery.
In a statement issued here, the ACB said that it received a written complaint alleging therein that Ward Officer, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Hawal, Srinagar was demanding Rs 50,000 as a bribe for allowing construction in favor of the complainant.
He had asked the complainant to pay a bribe of Rs 20,000 as the first instalment.”
On receipt of the complaint a Case FIR No. 33/2022 U/S 7 PC Act, 1988 was registered with this Bureau, and an investigation was taken up, ACB said.
“During the investigation, a trap team was constituted. The team laid a successful trap and caught the accused public servant Mohd Maqbool Bhat S/o Ali Mohd Bhat R/o HMT Srinagar, Ward Officer, Hawal SMC Srinagar red handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs 20,000 from the complainant as the first installment of Rs 50,000,” the ACB said.
He was arrested on the spot and the bribe money was also recovered from his possession in presence of independent witnesses. Subsequently, searches were carried out at different locations associated with the accused. Further investigation into the case is going on.
