UP riots: 2nd BJP MLA booked under National Security Act

MUZAFFARANAGAR, Sep 26:
BJP MLA Suresh Rana, arrested in connection with the Muzaffarnagar riots, was today booked under National Security Act, taking the number of those held under the stringent law to ten.
Rana is the second BJP MLA to be booked under NSA after party legislator Sangeet Som.
A person can be detained under NSA for three months and he need not be produced in a court within 24 hours of his custody as required under the normal procedure. The maximum period of detention under NSA is 12 months.
District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma told reporters that a warrant of NSA was served on Rana in the Banda district jail.
Rana was the first legislator to be arrested for his alleged role in the riots. He was arrested from Lucknow on September 20, soon after the conclusion of the Monsoon Session of Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
“The administration is working on booking a total of 18 people under the NSA, including these ten who have been served warrants,” IG (Law and Order) R K Vishwakarma told reporters here.
The officer said that 1,826 arms have been surrendered and proceedings to cancel the licences of 2,013 is presently underway.
After the riots, which claimed 49 lives, a court in Muzaffarnagar had issued non-bailable warrants against 16 persons.
They included three BJP MLAs — Rana, Sangeet Singh Som and Bhartendu Singh —  BSP MP from Muzaffarnagar, Qadir Rana; BSP MLAs, Noor Saleem Rana and Jameel Ahmed; former Congress Minister, Saeeduzaman, and the Bharatiya Kisan Union chairman and spokesperson, Naresh Tikait and Rakesh Tikait. (PTI)
