JAMMU, Aug 30: Department of History, University of Jammu and DRISHTI-Stree Adhyayan Prabodhan Kendra Pune today released two books, ‘Status of Women in Border Areas in India with Special Reference to Jammu and Kashmir’ and ‘Status of Women Prisoners in Jammu and Kashmir’, here at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu.
Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof Umesh Rai presided over the function, while Gita Gunde, Former Convenor, Mahila Samanvey, Mumbai was the chief guest and Dr. Anjali Desh Pande, Secretary, DRISHTI graced the occasion as guest of honour.
The program started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Vice Chancellor University of Jammu, Prof. Umesh Rai in presence of other dignitaries.
Prof. Suman Jamwal, HoD, Department of History, University of Jammu, Mamta Singh, President, Nari Shakti, J&K and Anita Sharma were also present on the occasion. Prof. Umesh Rai lauded the efforts of the DRISHTI and the survey conducted by them and encouraged various departments of the University for carrying out inter-disciplinary research based on Surveys.
While welcoming the guests, Anita Sharma extended thanks to the Vice Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai and Prof. Suman Jamwal for their efforts towards the academic activities catering to the empowerment of women and for collaborating in such important events.
Mamta Singh, President, Nari Shakti, J&K, introduced the program and gave an overview of the survey conducted in the border areas and prisons of J&K with respect to women. She then went on to give details pertaining to the survey and the subsequent compilation of the books.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Suman Jamwal highlighted the achievements of the department regarding academic activities and the active participation of the department in issues related to women and their upliftment.
Dr. Anjali Desh Pande extended gratitude to the University of Jammu in general and the Department of History in particular for their support to DRISHTI, Stree Adhayan Prabodhan, Pune. She gave an account of the activities performed by the organization in various states and Union Territories with respect to women’s issues and their active participation in the upliftment of women.
She outlined that recently the organization had conducted a nationwide survey of about 74,000 women and is working towards creating awareness among the society towards gender sensitization.
Gita Gunde threw light on women’s issues like their psychological issues, health matters, etc. and the solutions for these problems.
