JAMMU, Aug 31: Expressing grief over the sad demise of Mikhail Gorbachev (former president of Soviet Union), Veteran Congress leader and Member Parliament (MP) Dr Karan Singh said that Gorbachev made an invaluable contribution to save humanity from another conflict.
“I am sad to learn that my friend Mikhail Gorbachev has passed away. We both happened to have been born in Europe in the same week. I met him several times, including as a member of his Green Cross international-an Environmental think tank,” Dr Karan Singh said in a statement.
Dr Singh said that though Gorbachev may have lost support in his own country by allowing the peaceful dismantling of the Soviet Union (the last colonial empire) but he made an invaluable contribution to save humanity from another conflict.
“I am sure historians will look back and appreciate the crucial role that Gorbachev played in dismantling the Iron curtain between East and West Europe, thereby liberating over a dozen countries in East Europe, Baltic and the Central Asian republics from Soviet domination,” added Congress veteran.
