SRINAGAR, Sept 28:  Angry residents at Acchan dumping site in the old city area of Srinagar pelted stones at the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner, Dr G N Qasba and other officials for not addressing their problems.
In order to better its image that has been marred by alleged corruption and allowing unplanned growth of the city, SMC conducted a media tour of the city for local journalists.
But at Acchan where the SMC dumps the city waste, the top official of the SMC had to face embracement when he was addressing the locals and media there. He claimed that the SMC has put some scientific methodology to control the foul smell emanating from the dumping site at Acchan but the residents of the area refuted his claims and said that in the evening the foul smell spreads in parts of old city area.
The locals of Acchan interrupted the SMC Commissioner in front of media persons saying that the SMC top official was lying as “nothing has improved at the site.” They said that the SMC officials are deceiving them since 1985.
The locals said that during night hours foul smell spreads to around 5 kilometre radius from the dumping site. “You should visit this place in the evening and you will observe what we are facing from last 25 years,” angry locals told SMC Commissioner.
Residents in various localities blamed that the SMC sweepers charge them money for sweeping the streets.
