JAMMU, Sept 2: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing (SMVDCN), Kakryal, Katra in collaboration with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K organized awareness lecture on “ Human Organ Donation” in its campus today which was attended by faculty and students of the college.
Dr. Shailla Cannie, Principal and Dean, SMVDCN welcomed all the dignitaries and spoke about the significance of human organ donation.
Dr. Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director SOTTO J&K was the guest speaker on the occasion. While addressing the gathering, he explained “National Organ Transplant Program (NOTP)”. He explained that when someone becomes brain dead due to Road Traffic Accident, brain hemorrhage, cardiac arrest or many other reasons in a hospital and is on support system in ICU, Organs and Tissues of this person still remain alive and artificially maintained, once you remove the, support, this person, is dead. Such person, as per The Organ & Tissue Transplantation Act, 1994(THOTA), is declared dead.
The donation of organs and tissues of such person by the family can save up to 8 human beings with end stage organ failure. He emphasized the importance of organ donation and dispelled common misconceptions /myths regarding organ donation. He inspired everyone to pledge their organs.
