JAMMU, Sept 3: Former minister and president, Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS), Th Gulchain Singh Charak has demanded immediate plugging of breach in Ranbir Canal near Dharap village in RS Pura.
Talking to media-persons here today, Charak expressed serious concern over the damage caused to Basmati rice crop in R S Pura with the breach in the canal. He said the breach has caused stoppage of further flow of water in the canal to other areas of RS Pura, Suchetgarh and Bishnah.
Over 25 km of area of the main canal has been affected in RS Pura and Suchetgarh. From distributory No.10 to 17 has been badly hit with this. About 20,000 hactare area of Ranbir Singh Pura and Suchetgarh has been badly hit with it, he added.
Referring to the plight of farmers and other affected people, Charak said breach in the canal has severely affected the Basmati rice crop in nearly 20000 hac area.
The DSS members urged upon the Chief Secretary and advisor K K Bhatnagar , to personally intervene into the matter and settle the issue by plugging of the breach created in the canal.
Charak said in this age of good technology available and provision of small amount of money, for welfare of people being no handicap, as claimed by the government so often, particularly for the farming community, an appropriate agency must be engaged to plug the breach and restore the flow of irrigation water in the Ranbir Canal immediately.
He further reiterated his demand to declare Ranbir Canal as State heritage and also take some measures as proposed in this regard, so that regular maintenance, upkeep and improvement of this glorious life line of Jammu is ensured without fail.
Charak cautioned that further delay in this regard will totally deprive thousands of farming community members, of their food and income. He demanded highest priority from the Government in the matters concerning upkeep of historic Ranbir Canal.
