JAMMU, Sept 11: BJP national Executive Member and former Minister, Priya Sethi today said that Narendra Modi Government was the first Government in the country which worked in the direction of women empowerment in J&K who were deprived of the same in last 70 years after independence.
Participating in a debate here, today the former Minister said BJP is the first political party in the country which gave 33 percent reservation to women in the organization while other political parties including Congress, NC, PDP or Communists have not done anything in this direction.
Priya Sethi said that the women in J&K during the rule of Congress, NC and PDP faced total discrimination as their State Subjects were valid till marriage only and it was only after the abrogation of controversial Article 370 that women of J&K were treated at par with other women of the country and their right on property remained intact even after their marriage even in case they marry outside the UT.
Priya Sethi said BJP in real sense empowered the women in the J&K after it came to power while other political parties only exploited them for their vested interests.
In reply to a question about the increase in crimes against women, she said that earlier there was no such consciousness and crimes were not reported. But now the women are also conscious of their rights and they know how to fight for them. The media as well as social media has also played a great role in this regard and the women have become fully conscious of their rights and liberty, she added.
