JAMMU, Sept 13: A 60 year-old female patient from Himachal Pradesh having deformities of both knees and spine by birth was operated successfully for a big obstructed umbilical hernia, with which he was suffering.
The patient was suffering from umbilical hernia for last many years but he was afraid of getting operated. When she developed a huge swelling over the umbilical region causing her unbearable distress, she consulted many surgeons in the Government as well as private setup for getting her operated but nobody dared to take up this cause due to very high risk of general or spinal anesthesia because of her associated congenital deformities.
Finally, the patient consulted Dr Rajive Gupta who took the challenge to operate her and relieve her misery. To avoid complications of general or spinal anesthesia in the patient, Dr Rajive preferred to operate her under regional anesthesia using 2% lignocaine infiltration along with intravenous sedation with the help of senior anesthetist Dr Pawan Kumar and OT Assistant Yoginder.
During the surgery, it was found that hernial sac was adherent to the overlying skin and its contents in the form of large intestines and greater omentum were also adherent to the sac which were released by meticulous dissection and hernia defect closed using a Prolene mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall and the patient was given oral feed in the evening and wasd discharged the next day.
According to the administration of Maxxlyfe Hospital, the patient was in dire need of surgery, otherwise she would have developed strangulation of gut anytime had it not been operated and the strangulation could have resulted in gangrene of the large intestine leading to septicemia and multiple organ failure.
They said many complicated cases are being operated in their hospital by the eminent surgeons of the city.
