JAMMU, June 12: Child labour is a menace which needs to be strictly dealt with and stringent action under the Law should be taken against those found guilty of employing minors as labours. This was stated by the Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment, Abdul Gani Malik at a meeting to review the functioning of the Labour Department in Jammu Division.
He directed the concerned officers to ensure regular inspections to check the problem of child labour. He said that Labour Department should work in liaison with Education Department and various NGOs to trace the whereabouts of the school dropouts who may be probable child labours. He stressed on generating more awareness to curb the problem of child labour and protecting the rights and interests of minors.
The Minister stressed on ensuring that the provisions of various Acts for labour welfare are implemented in letter and spirit and there is strict adherence to norms by the organisations.
The Minister directed that top priority should be accorded to streamline the registration process of the unregistered workers and said that regular check should be made to make the organisations more accountable for providing information in this regard. He stressed that the labours at the private construction sites should be brought under the ambit of the act and a check should be maintained that employers do not flaunt the laws and norms.
