Also known as Suryaputri or the child of the Sun, River Tawi has been converted into a dumping ground of garbage and polythene bags resulting in its water getting polluted and due to ill usage and neglect of criminal levels. The worst is done with it by the dirty nallahs flowing into it, dumping of polythene bags, chemical wastages and the like.
It badly affects its water and its total flow of water has also decreased over the last two decades. Do we ever see any fish in this river which used to be in it before? It is strange that we the residents of Jammu see ourselves truck loads of garbage being emptied in its water which most of us drink through taps after its treatment at places like Sitlee, Dounthli, Boria etc. As in most of the cases courts have to intervene for the welfare of the people and for making the executive perform throughout the country, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had issued directives for avoidance of dumping of garbage in this river, yet it goes on without any check. We are ourselves killing nature and disturbing the ecological balance to the utter loss to the future generations. Let us join in the “Save Tawi” and “Clean Tawi” campaigns.
