JPDA conducts seminar on ‘misuse of habit forming medicines’

JAMMU, Oct 9: Jammu Pharmaceutical Distributors Association (JPDA), Jammu Province conducted a seminar on the topic ‘Misuse of Habit Forming Medicines & The Way Forward’, last evening.
The chief guest on the occasion was Ramesh Kumar (Divisional Commissioner Jammu) and guest of honour was Lotika Khajuria (State Drugs Controller, J&K UT).
In his opening remarks, Rakesh Gupta (president of the Association) apprised the participants who were from both the wholesale and retail business of medicines that drugs/medicines under the Schedule H and Narcotics Category were of extreme importance for the treatment of diseases like Stress Management/Pain and Post Operative Care. He cautioned and requested one and all to co-operate in plugging all the loop holes to ensure that these medicines were not misused for addiction.
Lotika Khajuria explained various measures taken by the Department to curb the misuse of these important medicines. She also apprised all that many licenses had been cancelled who were misusing the same. She said that misusing of these drugs was not just confined to the city limits but also reported from far flung areas.
The Deputy Drugs Controller Mohd Iqbal Palla explained the medicine traders as to how these important medicines which were weapons against diseases were being misused. He said that they shall welcome any information regarding misuse of these medicines while keeping the identity of informers a total secret.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu explained at length the alarming figures of the percentage of people misusing these important medicines. He told the audience that drug addicts be treated as patients but drug peddlers as criminals. He assured all that no mercy shall be shown to people involved in such crimes and law shall take its own course.
Also present on the occasion were the Assistant Drugs Controllers and Inspectors from the Drugs Control Organization. The other office bearers of the Association present were Ajay Gupta (senior vice president), Sudesh Gupta (vice president), Sanjay Gupta (general secretary), Amit Sharma (joint secretary) and Manmeet Singh (treasurer).
