JAMMU, Oct 16: Senior leaders of National Panthers Party (NPP) under the leadership of its president Vilakshan Singh today paid rich tribute to the student martyrs who laid down their lives in the year 1966 to protect the dignity and honour of the Dogras.
During Congress rule in J&K in 1966, three students were brutally shot dead by the police right inside the premises of Gandhi Memorial Science College, Jammu during a movement led by Prof Bhim Singh. Vilakshan Singh while paying homage to student martyrs recalled that Prof Bhim Singh who was the chief organizer of the student movement escaped the police bullets.
While paying tribute to the student martyrs, Vilakshan Singh praised their sacrifices, which has brought not one university but many other institutions in Jammu Pradesh with several professional colleges. He said the present generation must not forget the supreme sacrifices of the student martyrs who laid down their lives while fighting against injustice meted out to Jammu province by the then ruling parties.
Meanwhile, four activists of Jammu Joint Students’ Federation (JJSF) sat on a three-day fast today to commemorate and pay homage to the student martyrs of 1966. Early in the morning, JJSF activists led by Pushvinder Manhas (president), Atul Sudan (vice president), Prof Rajesh Gupta (Principal GGM Science College), staff members along with students of the College lighted lamp and offered garlands at Shaheedi Sthal of the martyrs Gursharan Singh, Brij Mohan, Gulshan Handa and Subash Chander.
Federation activists Kanav Sharma, Rahul Sharma, Raghu Nandan, and Abhishek observed a fast at Shaheedi Sthal, GGM Science College, Jammu. Speaking on the occasion, Pushvinder Singh, said the student martyrs of 1966 were an inspiration for them as they laid down their lives while fighting for the rights of the people of the Jammu region. He said the Dogras, especially the student community, should learn about the sacrifice of the martyrs and be inspired by them.
