Farmers start saffron cultivation in Poonch

POONCH, Oct 26: Saffron cultivation is on trials from last few years and the results are coming better with every passing year at Baila village of Mandi here.
As per the information, a senior officer of Horticulture Department engaged scholars of School of Bio-Technology, University of Jammu for trials of saffron cultivation in Baila village in 2016 for the first time, and its growth is increasing with every passing year.
Ajaz Ahmed, a teacher by profession, who is also cultivating saffron, said that after first trial in my land, we starts cultivating in 8 other lands of village, which are also on trials.
“As I have received the reports from scholars, the quality of saffron cultivated here is almost equivalent to Pampore and Kishtwar districts, and they have found the land of Tehsil Mandi, fertile for its cultivation”, he added.
Local farmers of this village urged Government to help them in any way for opportunities to cultivate more saffron along with other crops.
