Srinagar, Nov 19: A young boy along with his uncle was rescued around midnight after more than 10 hours from a 20-feet deep well in Chak-e-Hatmulla village of the Nagri area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
It all happened when the boy identified as Firdous Ahmad Mir fell into the well near his residence after he was trying to fetch the cricket ball. Seeing his nephew getting stuck in the well, his uncle Mohammad Shafi Mir also jumped in.
As a result, both got stuck, prompting the authorities to launch a massive rescue operation which remained successful after continuous efforts for nearly 10 hours.
As part of the disaster management protocol, the rescuers dug a tunnel adjacent to the well to save precious lives.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Doifode Sagar Dattatray who was supervising the operation said that it was sensitive and tough, but in the end, he said, it remained successful.
“Men and machinery which included four JCBs were moved within ten minutes of the incident. Three ambulances and a team of doctors were kept on standby,” he said.
Tehsildar, DySP Headquarters, SHO and other functionaries also oversaw the rescue operation till its conclusion at around 2:00 a.m. “Soon after evacuation, the duo was removed to Sub District Hospital Kupwara for immediate treatment,” officials said.
Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Dr Abdul Gani Dar said that the boy has been sent back home.
“The elderly male had a humerus fracture and he has been referred to Bone and Joint hospital for orthopaedic consultation. Otherwise, by other parameters he is also normal”, the MS added.
