JAMMU, Oct 16: National symposium on “Frontier Areas in Solid State and Materials Science”, organized by the Indian Association of Solid State Chemists and Allied Scientists (ISCAS), began at the ISCAS Institute of Solid State and Materials Science, Jammu University, here today.
About two hundred scientists and academia from different parts of the country are participating in the programme.
Prof N B Singh, president of ISCAS and senior Professor, Sharda University, Greater Noida (UP) inaugurated the symposium. In his inaugural address Prof Singh exhorted the scientists on the importance of the solid state and materials science and invited them to join the Association (ISCAS) to strengthen research and teaching in the field.
Prof R P Sharma from the Department of Chemistry, Punjab University, Chandigarh delivered the keynote address on “Anion Recognition Through Weak Interactions: A Structural Perspective”.
Prof Indu Bhushan Sharma, Director, ISCAS Institute of Solid State and Materials Science, while welcoming the participants, expressed the view that importance of solid state science lies in developing materials of strategic importance for use in space, defence, energy conversion and conservation. He also threw light on the work being done in this field at the ISCAS Institute, Jammu.
Prof H D Juneja, Nagpur University, Nagpur, and Dr Aparna Banerjee, Senior Scientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai were guest of honour in the inauguration function.
Research papers on Nanomaterials, Super conductivity, Magnetic and Electronic Materials, Environmental Monitoring, Nuclear Materials etc were presented in the symposium today and the participants deliberated on these subjects in details. Prof B L Sharma highlighted the activities of ISCAS, while Prof G P Sachdev, organizing secretary, conducted the programme.
