JAMMU, Oct 16: The festival of Eid-ul-Azha was today celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety across Jammu region.
The members of Muslim community offered prayers for peace and harmony across the region on the occasion.
In Winter Capital here the main function was held at Idgah and Jamia Masjid where thousands of Muslims offered Eid prayers.
The members of Hindu Community also greeted their Muslim brothers on the occasion.
Minister for Planning Ajay Sadhotra, BJP MLA Jammu East, Ashok Khajuria and National Conference provincial president, Devender Singh Rana visited the Eidgah and extended Eid greetings to members of Muslim community.
Meanwhile, bakery shops witnessed heavy rush of people while children attired in colourful dresses asked for ‘Eidi’ from the family members.
At Malik Market, Minister for Horticulture and Floriculture, Raman Bhalla wished Eid greetings to Muslims.
Lakhs of sheeps and goats were sacrificed on the occasion.
Tight security arrangements were made at all the venues for smooth and incident free celebrations.
The Eid Namaz was also offered at Jamia Masjid, Kachi Chawni, Peer Baba Mosque at Tawi bridge, Talab Tillo Mosque, Malik Market Narwal, Jamia Masjids Bhatindi, Sunjwan etc.
However, no sweets were exchanged this year on Eid on the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan due to the prevailing tension on the border.
No untoward incident was reported from Kishtwar town which had witnessed mob violence on Eid-ul-Fitr on August 9 as administration had made elaborate security arrangements on the occasion. The Eid prayers were held in peaceful and cordial manner and no untoward incident was reported from any where.
Meanwhile, Congress leader and Member District Advisory Board for Kissans Shamsher Singh Bhandari has complimented the district administration for maintaining peace, law and order in the Kishtwar town on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
Eid was also celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety at Rajouri where thousands of Muslims participated in prayers at Eidgah. Besides, Eid prayers were also offered at Sunderbani, Kalakote, Thanamandi, Manjakote and Koterranka in the district. Congress spokesperson and MLC Ravinder Sharma greeted Muslims at Sunderbani on the occasion.
Led by Moulana Mohammed Ayub Nakshbandi a large number of Muslims offered Eid Namaz at Mendhar Jamia Masjid while at Harni Moulana Noor Aalam Noori led a large number of Muslims to offer Eid prayers on the occasion. As border shelling continued on LoC the people made special prayers for peace and good neighbourly relations between India and Pakistan on the occasion.
Thousands of Muslims from Poonch city and adjoining villages offered Eid prayers at Eidgah Poonch. Prominent among those who offered prayers there included MLA, Poonch, Aijaz Ahmed Jan, MLC, Jhangir Mir, Gujjar and Bakerwal Development Board Chairman, Bashir Ahmed Naz, DC and SSP Poonch. MLC Yashpaul Sharma and other members of Hindu and Sikh community greeted their Muslim brothern on the occasion.
Eid was celebrated by Jawans of J&K LI at LoC Poonch with fervour and gaiety today. On the occasion Brig S K Acharya, Commander Poonch Brigade and Col K L Singh addressed a gathering of Jawans and wished them Eid greetings.
At Udhampur Namaz was offered by members of Muslim community at Eidgah, Udhampur. Eid-ul-Azha was also celebrated at Chenani, Ramnagar, Majalta, Khun and Basantgarh. People prayed for Indo-Pak peace and prevalence of communal amity and brotherhood in the country.
Eid prayers were also held at Banihal, Ramban, Gool, Arnas, Gool Gulabgarh, Bani, Doda, Bhaderwah and other areas of Jammu region.
Ex-Minister Surjit Singh Slathia visited various Gujjar Bastis in the Vijaypur Constituency to greet the members of Muslim community on the occasion.
Army also celebrated the festival of Eid with the residents of remote belts of bordering Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Durga Battalion of Army today celebrated Eid-ul-Azha with villagers and ex-servicemen of far flung areas along the Line of Control with traditional fervour.
Despite the adverse situation and rugged terrain, Army organised the festival to showcase the great ethos of communal harmony and religious tolerance.
Senior Army officials also conveyed best wishes and Eid Mubarak to the troops, civilians and their families.
The gathering, prayed for prosperity, integrity and communal harmony in the country.
