Anganwadi is an initiative of GoI under Integrated Child Development Services Scheme with an aim of creating awareness among women about child care, family planning , primary health centres for pregnant ladies and nursing mothers. Started with hundred odd branches at Mysore in 1975 , today Anganwadi have more than 20 lakh branches providing employment to more than 30 lakh, primarily women, in India. Anganwadi worker is usually from that very community and area, well versed with local language, local health problems of women and children as such capable of handling many things under expert guidance. Registration of new births as well as deaths of both mother and children are also part of Anganwadi work and different GoI schemes are implemented through these workers only. No country can progress without empowering women and without healthy women and her child it is not possible, as such, GoI and LG administration are rightly focusing on them. Ten GoI departments under different ministries are coordinating with Women and Child Welfare Ministry for Anganwadi cause. Anganwadi workers ensure participation and cooperation of the people and also provide informal early education to children.
SAC has taken important decision regarding recruitment policies of Anganwadi workers, set maximum age 60 yrs, minimum qualification 10+2 for worker and matric for helper and not beyond graduation in any case, have to be from same ward as per national policy. Their leaves, service rules and termination process along with new recruitment clauses are well defined now with no ambiguity at all. They are important pillars for health/education and torch bearers of Government schemes, immensely helpful to women and their children of remote and hilly terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. They are real assets for local administration, in fact extended arms of Government. Every step towards Anganwadi workers’ welfare is right investment for future benefits.
