JAMMU, Dec 7: Tarun Uppal, social activist and Chairperson Nirbhay Bharat Foundation today met Anna Hazare, 85-year-old anti-graft activist in Ralegaon Siddhi and discussed various issues related to the farmers of Jammu and Kashmir.
Tarun Uppal requested Anna to visit Jammu and Kashmir and make the farmers of the Union Territory aware about the farming techniques being adopted by them in making the Ralegaon Siddhi a sustainable village model for the country.
He said Ralegan Siddhi is in a drought-prone and rain-shadowed area of Maharashtra. In 1975, this was a place of poverty and hopelessness. The abuse of their natural resources coupled with water runoff and soil degradation meant that this village of about 2,500 people, mostly farmers, was un-farmable. Wells are dry which made it difficult for the people to find drinking water during part of the year. As a result of this people started leaving Ralegan Siddhi in search of work and livelihood elsewhere, an understandable choice considering the situation they were facing. It were hectic efforts of Anna Hazare which made the Ralegaon Siddhi a sustainable village model for the country.
Tarun Uppal urged Anna to visit to J&K and make farmers aware of the advanced techniques of farming without using fertilizers, rain water harvesting, water shed development, Nasha Mukt so that the villages of Jammu and Kashmir can also be brought at par with model villages of the country.
Anna Hazare appreciated the thought of Taun Uppal and assured to visit Jammu very shortly to make farmer familiarize with the advance technique of farming.
