JAMMU, Oct 21: Keeping in view the prevailing security scenario on the International Border, the Border Security Force (BSF) has decided to augment present surveillance mechanism by installing Un-attended Ground Sensors on the border with the Pakistan.
Reliable sources told EXCELSIOR that the prevailing situation on the International Border has constrained the Border Security Force Headquarters to augment present surveillance mechanism and Unattended Ground Sensors have been found as a better choice for the same.
“The Unattended Ground Sensors would help the Border Guards in effectively covering the gaps between the Border Out Posts, likely routes of infiltration and ex-filtration”, they said, adding “these sensors could be employed on IB without employing men and endangering their lives to provide all weather coverage from 150-500 meters”.
They said that Unattended Ground Sensors are designed to be deployed and perform in the operational areas in remote target detection, location and recognition of target and objects of interest for weeks or even months without being attended. “These sensors will help in classifying and reporting target information via wireless links to a remote control centre”, sources added.
Disclosing that BSF Headquarters has invited Expression of Interest for installation of Unattended Ground Sensors, sources said that BSF has projected the requirement of Unattended Ground Sensors having capability to give real time alarms to detect intruder(s) locations simultaneously to ensure round the clock surveillance by utilizing a combination of day and night surveillance cameras, control and display units, hand held control receiver and variety of sensors like Passive Infrared Sensors, Magnetic Sensors, Seismic Sensors, Make and Break Sensors, Acoustic Sensors, Micro Wave Sensors and Cable Sensors etc.
In response to a question, sources said that the Passive Infrared Sensors help in detecting movements of objects in a narrow field while as Magnetic Sensors monitor movement of metallic objects such as weapons or vehicles. Similarly, Seismic Sensors help in identifying ground vibration caused by vehicles or pedestrians and Make and Break Sensors give instant alarm in case of cut or break.
Likewise, Acoustic Sensors help in detecting targets by noise of engine or tracks and Micro Wave Sensors provide detection of target from 3 to 100 meters in all weather conditions. The Pressure Cable Sensors help in detecting the passage of an object by sensing the pressure on sensor buried under ground.
“These early warning monitoring system can be deployed far away from a base, border or other secured areas and can be deployed in very less time to provide live sensing for months to protect the perimeter of any area without endangering personnel”, sources said, adding “the integration of Unattended Ground Sensors with surveillance equipments will give better dividend to help BSF for better border guarding”.
They said that technical specifications for Unattended Ground Sensors for the International Border have been finalized by the Sub-Group of Technical Experts on Surveillance Equipment constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs after detailed deliberations.
