Srinagar, Oct 24: Protest erupted in Ashmuqam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district after a woman’s body was received by her parents alleging she has been forced to commit suicide by her in-laws.
Police said a woman, Rabia, who was married to Nisar Ahmad Malik of Bonagam Shopian, consumed poison at her in-laws. After consuming poison, she was shifted to Sub District Hospital for treatment.
“As her condition was critical, the doctors in Shopian hospital referred her to SMHS, Srinagar, for tertiary treatment, but she succumbed on the way,” Station House Officer, Shopian, Irshad Rather, said.
The SHO said her body was handed over to her parents after postmortem, which confirmed she had committed suicide.
Police has filed a case under FIR 150/2013 has been registered in police station Shopian, and her widower has been detained for questioning to investigate whether she was abetted to commit suicide, Rather said.
As soon as her body reached Ashmuqam, family members along with other local people took to streets to protest against her in-laws, alleging that Rabia was forced to commit suicide as she was being harassed regularly by them.
The protestors blocked the Khanabal- Anantnag road for hours, and resorted to stone throwing after a PDP MLA of the area tried to visit the mourning family.
Later, police swung into action to disperse the protestors.
