Shortage of Safai Karamcharis dominate problems in Ward 22

JAMMU, Dec 30: There is a shortage of Safai Karamcharis in Ward number 22 of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and stray dogs have also disturbed the life of people living there.
Telling more in this regard, Jai Deep Sharma Councillor of the Ward informed that there are 38 Safai Karamcharis in the Ward while there is a need of 60 and due to this shortage cleanliness of the area is badly affected.
However, he claimed that cleanliness there is still at an average by the proper use of available workforce.
In an exclusive interaction with the Excelsior, Sharma, who politically belongs to BJP and is a first time Councillor, said that stray dogs have also created a lot of problems in his Ward.
“These canines not only litter here and there but also bite people and chase two wheelers and have created a wave of terror among women, children and old age people,” he said.
The Councillor informed that many drug addicts and peddlers are active in his Ward for which the police should take cognizance.
He said that cases of thefts involving Open Air Gym parts have been reported from his Ward.
“Autos collecting garbage by moving from door-to-door are doing a good job and after this service was introduced, garbage dumps have been reduced in the Ward,” the Councillor maintained adding that this service has also generated revenue for JMC.
He said that there are some vacant plots in his Ward where the adjoining residents throw their garbage.
Sharma said that areas of his Ward include Shastri Nagar, Dogra Play Ground, Shastri Nagar Extension, back side locality of Arya Samaj Mandir Gandhi Nagar, Small Plots at the back side of Dudhadhari Mandir and the area from Gandhi Nagar Last Morh to Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground.
He claimed that despite his hard efforts a piece of land near Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground could not be made parking place for vehicles due to the official red tape culture existing in the offices of the concerned department.
It is pertinent to mention here that though more than four years of the mandatory tenure of five for the elected body of JMC have passed, many developmental works are yet to be completed while many of such works have not even seen the light of the day.
“I approached J&K Housing Corporation for a Recreation Centre in the Ward to facilitate elders but nothing has been done on it even till date,” the Councillor said.
He also said that three Nallahs flow through his Ward but there is no problem due to these while the one near Cremation Ground creates problems in rainy season and as a solution to that work with an expenditure of Rs. 1.98 crore has been started there.
Sharma said that 80 per cent work of construction and repair of lanes and drains is complete in his Ward and the work of blacktopping has also been almost complete there.
The Councillor further said that Street Lights have been installed in entire of his Ward and the non-functional among these are being repaired in routine.
He said that 10 more High Mast Light are needed for parks and Chowks in the Ward.
Sharma said that there are 10 Public Parks in his Ward and all of these are properly developed with Open Air Gyms in some of these parks and play stations in some others while lights, seating facilities and tiled pathway are there in all of these parks.
He said that there is no public toilet in his Ward but there is one playground and work is underway on the Community Hall there.
“On development of Cremation Ground in my Ward JMC has spent Rs. 1.5 crore. Shishu Smadhis are also there in the Ward and for the development works there an estimate is being made,” JMC Councillor Sharma stated.
He claimed that almost all the residents of his Ward have made their Ayushman Cards and most of the eligible Voters have got their Voter Cards and same is the status of Domicile Certificates in the Ward.
“There is a permanent camp for Aadhar Cards at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Shastri Nagar,” Sharma continued.
The Councillor said that water coolers are also there in his Ward to facilitate the people and there is one Health Centre also to serve the public.
“There is encroachment over Nallahs in my Ward while house numbering has been done there,” he said.
