SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today expressed its deep concern over Government’s silence on blood bath that is taking place on roads of Jammu and Kashmir in which more than 10,000 people have lost their lives in last 10 years and over 85,000 have suffered injuries.
Addressing a press conference, noted road safety activist and AAP vice president for central Kashmir Nasir Ali Khan said that road safety is an important issue in J&K but unfortunately successive governments have paid no attention towards this and blood bath on J&K roads due to accidents is going on unabated.
Sharing official figures, Khan said that more than 10,000 people have lost their lives in accidents in last 10 years and over 85,000 have received injuries and the present figure of deaths in road accidents in J&K per year is around 750.
He said that not even a single government in past has shown concern towards this big issue and no concrete step has ever been taken for road safety due to which road accidents have become a new routine in J&K and Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is worst affected due to it.
Khan said that biggest failure of successive governments in J&K towards road safety can be gauged from the fact that J&K is still to have a proper transportation policy and lack of this policy is a major reason for rising road accidents.
He called for a policy to provide proper registration and license on the pattern of Ola and Uber to Sumo drivers driving their vehicles on roads so that these Sumo drivers can be properly regulated and their working will be smoothen.
District president Budgam Hakeem Ruhuallah Ghazi said that Government in J&K introduced the J&K Road Safety Council Act 2018 which advocated the formation of State Road Safety Council but this State Road Safety Council is being run on papers through quarterly meetings. He also questioned about utilization of funds meant for this council and called for a proper audit.
