JAMMU, Jan 15: Regional Transport Officer Pankaj Bhagotra along with ARTO HQ, Mohammad Saleem, ARTO FS Tara Mani, MVIs Rajeev Kundal, Anupam Gandotra and other staff members laid down special Naka on Jammu Pathankot National Highway and seized 6 vehicles plying without HSRP and 12 vehicles were booked under various offences of MV Act and Rules and a fine of Rs 10,500 was realised on spot from various violators.
During the drive more than 150 vehicles were checked/stopped and the drivers/conductors/passengers were made aware about the road safety measures like putting on seat belts, avoiding over speeding, not using mobile phones while driving.
The common traffic violations such as over speeding, driving without seat belt, riding without helmets, modification of two-wheelers and the use of mobile phones while driving, among others are main cause of road accidents and urged the drivers to be disciplined on roads and reminded them of duties and responsibilities while driving and having self restraint in speeding limits is a way forward towards changing driving behaviours.
Earlier as a part of Road Safety Week, a debate competition was held at GDC Paloura in which a large number of students participated followed by crash helmet distribution programme which was carried out along with Traffic Department at various chowks of Jammu city in which a large no of helmets were distributed among the Two Wheeler Riders and pillions followed by an health check up camp at Channi Himmat for Drivers, conductors, and general public.
Meanwhile, cracking the whip on erring passenger buses Team MVD Samba issued notices for cancellation of fitness certificate of passenger buses, who have tampered their speed limiting devices and set speed limit of 120 KMPH instead of allowed 60 KMPH.
The drive was launched by ARTO Samba Rehana Tabassam and MVI Vikas Srivats.
Sharing details ARTO Samba said that during the drive major focus was on buses with built-up Speed Limiting. Devices were checked electronically (OBD) with the help of TATA software in collaboration with M/s Jamkash Vehicleades Vijaypur.
She informed that 24 buses were found either without SLD or with tempered inbuilt SLD ranging from 90KMPH to 120 KMPH instead of a fixed limit of 60 KMPH. She further added that as many as 140 vehicles were checked out of which 70 vehicles were Challaned/ Compounded against various violations and fine to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh was realised from violators on spot.
In view of the increasing fatal road accidents in the State, the Transport Commissioner J&K UT has issued strict instructions to monitor speed of the passenger vehicles and directed for taking strict action like cancellation of fitness certificates of erring buses drivers who have done tampering with the speed governors.
