Shooting rates of property, gold pose big hurdle in establishing DA cases: SP CBI

Jammu, Oct 31: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is facing difficulties in establishing Disproportionate Asset (DA) cases against corrupt officials owing to shooting prices of the property, particularly real estate and gold.
“DA cases are very difficult to be  probed as corrupt officers are adopting the modus operandi of investing in property, particularly real estate and gold, rates of which are sharply increasing per day,” said Dr Armaandeep Singh, SP CBI, Jammu, while interacting with media persons, here today.
Admitting that gratification cases in which the accused are caught red handed, are easily to be probed, the SP however maintained that major emphasis of the CBI was  not on laying traps for booking more corrupt Government servants but taking all investigation to the logical conclusion.
“The CBI is presently investigating around 15 cases of corruption and other nature in Jammu and total 12 traps were laid last year,” he informed in reply to a query and added that 25 CBI cases were disposed off last year with 70 percent conviction rate.
Regarding the infamous BRO scam in Leh and recent arrest of an Assistant Director of the Union Ministry of Handicrafts, Dr Armaandeep Singh said that investigations in both the cases were in progress.
However, at the same time, the CBI officer admitted limitations of the Central Investigating Agency, particularly the shortage of staff on board. “Owing to inadequate number of investigating officers and limited staff, around 6000 cases of CBI investigation are pending all over the country,” he  said.
The CBI officer also informed that the agency was observing a Vigilance Awareness Week to disseminate awareness about vigilance among general public. “Various activities to highlight the role of CBI in the service of nation since the last 50 years are being organized during this week from October 28 to November 2,” he said.
“The action plan of golden Jubilee celebrations of CBI includes a country wide public awareness campaign, visit by the CBI officers to reputed educational institutions and promotion of advanced research in the institutions of CBI,” Dr Armaandeep Singh further informed.
Seeking to clarify for general masses that the CBI has mandate to proceed suo moto only against the Central Government servants, the officer insisted that the agency tried its best not to interfere into the jurisdiction of State investigating agencies.
