Naib Tehsildar, 2 JEs escape unhurt as vehicle buried under avalanche

Snowfall in hills, rains lash Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Feb 6: A Naib Tehsildar and two Junior Engineers (JEs) today had a close shave after their car was buried in a snowdrift in Gurez in Bandipora district.
A snow avalanche that struck the vehicle the trio were in at the Check Nallah on the Dawar-Gurez route caused no injuries.
The vehicle was damaged in the incident and was buried under the snow at the spot, leading to suspension of the traffic.
Pertinent to mention, the avalanche with medium hazard level was predicted to develop above 2200 metres over Bandipora, Ganderbal in the next 24 hours, according to a warning from JKDMA issued earlier.
In the meantime, rains lashed most plains including Srinagar while some parts of Kashmir received fresh snowfall with Gulmarg receiving more than one foot overnight.
On February 7 and 8, a Meteorological Department official said that the weather would be “partly cloudy”. “Widespread light to moderate snowfall and rain was expected at many places from February 9-11,” he said. However, he added, “no major snowfall” was expected during the next one week.
The minimum temperature saw further increase except at a few places with Srinagar recording a low of 1.8°C, the same as on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature was above normal by 2.2°C for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 1.6°C against 0.4°C the previous night and it was 3.1°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 0.2°C against minus 5.4°C the previous night and it was 6.0°C above normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.1°C against 0.0°C the previous night and it was 3.1°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 3.6°C against minus 6.4°C the previous night and it was 3.1°C above normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town the mercury recorded a drop and settled at minus 0.3°C against 2.9°C the previous night and it was 1.7°C above normal for the town.
Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 9.5°C and minus 14.0°C respectively. While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bacha’ (baby cold) which wil end on February 28.
