Yellowish snowfall in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Feb 10: Weatherman today said that “yellowish snowfall” in North Kashmir was due to dust carried out by winds from Central parts of Pakistan and Southern Afghanistan.

“Analysis of 2nd Generation Weather Satellite (Meteosat-9) of EUMETSAT (European Operational Satellite Agency) confirms that yesterday’s Yellowish/dusty snowfall over some parts of North Kashmir was dust carried out by winds from central parts of Pakistan & Southern Afghanistan which started around 7 PM IST and travelled Northeast wards and reached North Kashmir around 02:00 hours AM(IST),” the Meteorological department said here in a statement.
A woman and a girl were rescued alive after they were swept away by an avalanche that occurred in the Gurez area of Bandipora district this morning.
A snow avalanche occurred at around 0940 hours near Mazgund Bala area of Tutail in Gurez and swept away a girl, Tabassum Banoo daughter of Mohammad Yousuf, and a woman, Shahnaz Begum wife of Zahoro Ahmad.
An official said that immediately locals launched a rescue operation and after strenuous efforts and both of them were rescued. He said that people are advised not to go near avalanche prone areas. The Gurez Valley has seen several avalanches in the recent past and fortunately there has been no loss of life in them, the official added.
In the meantime, parts of Kashmir including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall while rains lashed the Valley.
The weather has improved and is likely to stay mainly dry for next 24 hours even though there are chances of scattered rains and snow at isolated places, a Meteorological Department official said.
Srinagar and other parts of the Valley were lashed by rains while hills had heavy snowfall. Gulmarg had 1.5 feet of snowfall, Kupwara over one feet and Pahalgam 3 inches.
Srinagar recorded a low of 0.7°C against 0.4°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, was above normal by 0.5°C for city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 1.8°C against minus 0.8°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 0.3°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.7°C above normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6°C, the same as on the previous night and it was 2.1°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.0°C against minus 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.2°C above normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at minus 0.5°C against 2.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.7°C above normal for the town.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 8.0°C and minus 9.2°C respectively.
While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended. Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bacha’ (baby cold) which will end on February 28.
