GCW Parade celebrates National Women’s Day

JAMMU, Feb 13: Centre for Women’s Studies, GCW Parade Ground, celebrated National Women’s day by organising a poetry recitation programme.
The day is observed annually on February 13 to commemorate the birth anniversary of ‘Nightingale of India’ and ‘Bharat Kokila’ Sarojini Naidu. She was a prominent figure in India’s Independence and a champion of women’s rights.
Students presidents of the college, Khushi and Navya Shrivatsa along with student members of CWS organised the event under the guidance of committee members, Dr Sonia Khajuria – Convenor, Dr Piyali Arora, Dr Palak Malhotra, Dr Mamta Sharma and Dr Asha Rani.
In his message, Principal of college, Dr S P Sarswat urged the students to break the glass ceiling and make name for themselves in all walks of life.
Dr Sonia Khajuria- Convenor, Centre for women’s studies, in her introductory remarks, talked about the significance of this day and role of Sarojini Naidu in India’s freedom struggle. She said that despite the progress made towards gender equality, women still face significant challenges including gender based violence, lack of access to education, health care and economic opportunities. National Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect on these challenges and renew our commitment to eradicate gender inequality, she added.
Khushi and Navya Shrivatsa of semester 5th ably compeered the programme. Navya began the programme by discussing the life and achievements of Sarojini Naidu in an impressive manner. Young poetesses enthralled the audience with their articulation filled with perfection of expression, thoughts, emotions, rhythm and music of words.
More than 20 budding poetesses participated in the event, which was attended by a number of students. A short video clip on Sarojini Naidu was also shown to the audience.
Dr Piyali Arora interacted with the participants and made them understand the strong message given by Sarojini Naidu in that video. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Khushi.
