Women’s Science Congress concludes

JAMMU, Nov 7: The 2nd J&K Women’s Science Congress on the theme “Empowering Women through Science and technology” concluded at Government College for Women, Parade Ground, here today.
The three day Congress was sponsored by the J&K State Council for Science and Technology and the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India.
In conjunction with the Congress, the College also initiated the Children’s Science Exhibition with a view to encourage, popularize and inculcate scientific temper among the children of the State in which a number of Government and private schools of Jammu participated.
The valedictory function started with colouful cultural items presented by the Music Department.
Dr Hemla Aggarwal, Principal, welcomed the chief guest, Principal, Govt Medical College, Jammu, Dr Shashi Gupta and the guest of honour Prof Indira Rathore, former Principal, besides academicians, researchers, scientists, students and entrepreneurs from different premier institutions, Universities of the State and research labs like University of Jammu, University of Kashmir, SMVDU, Katra, BGSBU, Rajouri, Central University, Jammu, SKUAST, J, GMC, Jammu, ASCOMS, Jammu, SKIMS, Srinagar, AIIMS, New Delhi, IIIM, Jammu, Central Ground water Board,  Jammu and other leading agencies.
The major highlight of the Congress was the Young Scientist Award Competition wherein a total of 18 budding scientists contested for the Young Scientist Award and Best Oral Presentation Award.
The session was chaired by Dr Zahoor Ahmed Chat and Dr Raj Kumar Rampal, while the judges for the competition were Prof M K Jyoti (Central University of Jammu) and Dr Parveen Kaur Soodan (Retd) Principal GMC Srinagar (ASCOMS, Jammu). In the competition, Dr Sumita Sharma was awarded the Best Oral Presentation award, while Dr Surbhi and Uzma Hamal were awarded the Young Scientist Awards.
The Children’s Science Exhibition comprising of 45 displayed models was visited by a number of school and college students and delegates of the Congress. The models prepared by the 26 schools both Govt & Private were evaluated by Prof Sarla Kohli (Former Principal, Higher Education Dept., Govt. of J&K), Prof B L, Gupta (Principal, Govt. Degree College, Billawar) and Prof Ranjeet Singh Jamwal (GGM Science College, Jammu).
First position was bagged by Kendriya Vidyalya No-1 Gandhi Nagar, second position was shared by Presentation Convent and KC International, third position went to Govt HSS, Nowabad and Govt Girls HSS, Canal Road. Six consolation prizes were taken by G D Goenka, Jodhamal, Girls Public School Talab Tillo, GHSS Domana, GHSS Khari and Jourian.
Dr Pragya Khanna was the organizing secretary of the Programme.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Neeraj Gupta.
