JAMMU, Feb 24: Namrta Sharma, President of the Women Wing of Aam Aadmi Party in Jammu and Kashmir, has criticized the decision of the LG Manoj Sinha-led Government to impose property tax on the people of the Union Territory.
Addressing media persons here, she called the decision “arbitrary and undemocratic” stating that the people of J&K are not economically well off, and imposing property tax would be an extra burden on them.
Sharma also criticized the Government for imposing GST on essential commodities, installing toll plazas, and boosting the liquor and mining mafia, which, according to her, has adversely impacted the people of J&K.
Sharma asserted that the process of collecting taxes and deciding the values of taxes is the sole prerogative of the elected institutions such as the legislature and municipal councils/corporations.
She argued that levying property tax in the absence of an elected Government is unconstitutional and that even the elected municipal bodies were not consulted.
Sharma warned the Government to immediately revoke its decision to impose property tax in Jammu and Kashmir, failing which, she said, the Aam Aadmi Party will have no option but to come on the roads.
