JAMMU, Mar 3: Son of the soil, Lieutenant General Narendra Kotwal, assumed the appointment of Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune today.
Lt Gen Kotwal hails from Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir and is first from the Chenab belt to rise to the rank of Lt General. Having completed his MBBS from Government Medical College Jammu, he did MD in Internal Medicine from AFMC. He is a Diplomate of National Board in Medicine and a Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS).
Continuing his academic journey further, he acquired Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Endocrinology from PGIMER Chandigarh. The General Officer is also an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi where he was awarded an M.Phil. in Defence and Strategic studies.
The General Officer belongs to a respectable family. His father Professor JL Kotwal is a renowned educationist and social reformer. His mother Bimla Baloria is also an educationist and is Director of KNIT Institute. His spouse Dr Sumedha Kotwal is an acclaimed Oncopathologist, a keen painter and environmentalist. She contributes immensely to conserving and nurturing wildlife.
The General Officer has the distinction of providing medical care to four Presidents of India. He has also held the coveted appointments of member of Specialist Committee under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana; Advisor, UPSC for empanelment of advisors; Member, Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). He has also served as the Vice President, Endocrinology Society of India and as Secretary, Indian Thyroid Society.
He has been an academic guide to numerous postgraduate and super specialty students. He has numerous scientific publications in acclaimed international and national indexed academic journals and is also a reviewer for numerous international and national academic journals.
In recognition for his dedication to patient care and service, he has been conferred with ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’ and ‘Sena Medal’. He has also been conferred with Chief of Army Staff Commendation (thrice) Vice Chief of Army Staff Commendation, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to The Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) Commendation and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (Western Command) Commendation.
Prior to the present appointment he was tenanting the coveted appointment of Major General Medical at Head Quarters, Madhya Bharat Area, Jabalpur and was over all in charge of 11 Military Hospitals, 10 Military Dental Centres and 55 ECHS Poly Clinics spanning six states.
