JAMMU, Nov 13: Indian Red Cross (IRC) organized a diabetes awareness programme on the eve of “World Diabetes Day”, here today.
On the occasion, renowned Diabetologist and National Prof of Diabetes Dr Jitendra Singh said that even as the diabetes epidemic is fast spreading all over India, J&K is also estimated to have a diabetes prevalence of around 10 per cent.
Dr Jitendra Singh said World Diabetes Day on November 14 is a grim reminder of the unflattering fact that India today happens to be the country with the second highest diabetic population in the world next only to China.
The matter of concern is the statistical projection that even as the world as a whole would register an overall rise of 120 per cent in its diabetic population during the first quarter of 21st century, India along with some other developing countries would emerge as home for more than 80 per cent of the world’s diabetic population, he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh cautioned, diabetes is a formidable problem for the 21st century India and being a foundational issue, it is far more crucial than any political issue.
Anil Padha, Secretary Indian Red Cross said, Dr Jitendra has brought pride to J&K by being recognized as one of the top diabetes experts of the country today.
On the occasion, a free medical check up was done by a team of doctors including Red Cross in-house Consultants Dr Kavita and Dr Bhan. Free blood test and free medicine were also provided.
Among others present were Diabetes Care Foundation (DCF) Convenor Ashok Chaturvedi, Coordinator Varun Malhotra, Red Cross office bearers Sareshta, Navneet and Ratan Lal.
