SRINAGAR : Leh in frontier region of Ladakh recorded the season’s lowest night temperature as the cold wave continued to tighten its grip in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, MeT office said today.
Leh, 434 kms from Srinagar, recorded a low of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius as compared to yesterday’s minus 10.7 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the state this season, a spokesman of the MeT department said here.
Srinagar also recorded the season’s lowest minimum temperature of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal during this part of the season, he said.
This is for the third straight day that the night temperature in Srinagar remained below freezing point, he added.
Kargil, also in frontier region of Ladakh, was the second coldest place in the state with a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place in the Valley as the night temperature there dropped by a few notches to settle at minus 4.2 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam, a health resort which serves as a base camp during annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius as against yesterday’s minus 3.0 degrees Celsius, the spokesman said.
He said Kupwara also recorded a drop of two degrees in the minimum temperature which settled at minus 2.1 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag, hill resort in south Kashmir, was the only place in the Valley where the night temperature did not fell below freezing point. The resort recorded a low of 0.1 degrees Celsius, the spokesman said adding Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir valley, recorded a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius.
The MET department has forecast mainly dry weather across Kashmir division over the next 24 hours. (AGENCIES)
