The landmark judgment of the Supreme holding that registration of FIR was mandatory under Section 154 of the Penal Code is a revolutionary decision that enriches and stabilizes democratic dispensation. The police cannot have the discretion of registering or not registering FIR. This judgment brings great relief to the weaker sections of society. This will undo the prevailing practice of Police officer going by his discretion. The Supreme Court Bench that delivered the judgment rightly said that not registering the FIR could lead to serious public disorder. We presume that this is a very important judgment and firmly establishes the democratic tradition of meting out justice to the affected people especially the poorer sections. We welcome a big reformative measure that will make justice reach every affected victim.
