KATHUA, Mar 19: Government Degree College Billawar organised national seminar on “Sustainable development and climate change” under the overall supervision of Prof Anita Jamwal, Principal of the College.
Om Prakash Vidyarhi (IFS) was chief guest on this occasion while as Dr M Ashiq Malik, renowned scientist, Dr Amardev Singh, Senior Scientist Department of Sericulture CSB Udhampur, Dr Ritu Dingra, Regional Vice Chair East and Southern Asia, New Delhi, Dr P L Uniyal, Professor Department of Botany, University of Delhi were key note speakers.
Dr Ashiq Malik, in his speech, said that sustainable development seeks to meet the needs of people without compromising the needs of future generations and while balancing social, economic and environmental considerations.
Dr Amardev Singh said there are four dimensions to sustainable development – society, environment, culture and economy – which are intertwined. “Sustainability is a paradigm for thinking about the future in which environmental, societal and economic considerations are balanced in the pursuit of an improved quality of life”, he added.
Dr Ritu Dingra said, “impacts of climate change also includes flooding and drought, displacing millions of people, sinking them into poverty and hunger, denying them access to basic services, expanding inequalities, stifling economic growth and even causing conflict”, adding “by 2030, an estimated 700 million people will be at risk of displacement by drought alone”.
Om Prakash Vidyarhi said, “chronicles historical and long-term impacts of climate change that left unmanaged will reverse development progress and compromise the well-being of current and future generations”. He emphasized that as the earth’s temperature rises, impacts will be felt more severely in developing countries.
The inaugural session was conducted by Dr Pinkey and vote of thanks was presented by Prof Lekh Raj. Dr Shamim Ahmed Bandey, organising secretary, introduced the theme of the national seminar. Second session proceedings were conducted by Prof Sunita, Assistant Professor Department of English while as 3rd session was conducted by Dr Manu Sharma, HOD English department.
Valedictory function was conducted by Dr Kulbir Singh, Head Department of Mathematics while as vote of thanks was presented by Dr Mohammad Maqeem. Technical sessions were arranged by Prof Parshotum Singh, Dr Nisar Wani, Dr Rakesh, Dr Suram Singh, Dr Rajni, Dr Sunil Singh and Dr Shakeeb.
