Srinagar, Mar 24: Happening for the first time, the doctors at the Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag have performed the first and rare para pharyngeal tumour surgery on a patient who is currently recovering after undergoing the most vital surgery.
As per doctors, the tumour is rare and was deep-neck in the patient (29) who was operated upon by a team of doctors and other assisting staff after a thorough tumour mapping was carried out by the concerned radiologists.
The officials said that the patient was operated on in the Department of ENT of GMC Anantnag by a team of doctors led by Dr Amir Yousuf.
They further said that the case was evaluated and CT tumour mapping was carried out by senior Radiologists Dr Owais H Dar and Dr Saika Shafi and with a team of anaesthesiologists led by Dr Anjum Shamin.
The doctors, through the complicated surgery, were able to remove a 5 cm tumour through, what has been stated as, a trans-cervical approach, with the loss of less than 10 ml blood during the procedure. “The patient is doing well and his condition is being monitored; he is in the post-operative phase after which he will again be evaluated before discharging,” the officials said.
Senior Consultant Radiologist Dr Owais H Dar told Excelsior that para pharyngeal tumours are quite rare as well as difficult to diagnose in the first place. “The approach of the surgery is challenging because of the major vessels and nerves that are situated in and around the region; it takes a lot of courage and expertise to navigate in and around the spot to take out the tumour,” he said.
He further said that the para pharyngeal tumours account for approximately 0.5% of all head and neck tumours and that most of such tumours usually go untraced while noting that the ENT Department under the guidance of Prof Dr Sajad M Qazi is performing advanced ENT surgeries routinely now.
