JAMMU, Mar 29: As several people today performed immersion of holy ‘Saakh’ (seeding stock of barley) marking culmination of auspicious Navratras today, Mayor Jammu Rajinder Sharma continued his awareness campaign against ‘Saakh Visarjan’ ritual at Jammu Tawi.
While the NSS volunteers of Jammu University were standing on the Tawi bridge for educating people to keep the Tawi water clean, Mayor Rajinder Sharma was seen personally requesting devotees to use Ranbir canal for immersion of ‘Saakh’.
Even as some devotees were little confused on being stopped from ‘Saakh’ immersion in Tawi River claiming that they were unaware of such campaign, several others agreed to the instructions and moved to Ranbir Canal for performing the ritual.
“We appealed people to cooperate Jammu Municipal Corporation in keeping the Tawi water neat and clean for drinking purpose and the response is encouraging,” said Mayor Rajinder Sharma.
Holding placards in their hands, a number of NSS volunteers were also seen standing on the Tawi bridge near Bikram Chowk and spreading message to keep the Tawi river pollution free.
Pertinent to mention that Mayor Rajinder Sharma had announced on last Monday that JMC in association with NSS volunteers of Jammu University would campaign to aware the devotees about harm of polluting Tawi water because of ‘Saakh’ immersion into the river.
The ongoing campaign will continue till Navmi tomorrow as people perform the ritual of ‘Saakh’ immersion these two days i. e. Ashtami and Navmi.
Meanwhile, large number of people were seen immersing holy ‘Saakh’ in Ranbir Canal water on the occasion of Ashtami.
