Lumberdars and Chowkidars

Strengthening and empowering the grass-roots employees always helps the administration. Lumberdar and Chowkidar are the two most important persons in the villages from the Raja and Maharaja eras. Lamberdars are the extended arm of the administration with the responsibilities of providing assistance in revenue and rent collection, assistance to revenue officials in maintaining land records, reporting any encroachment in their area, acting as the ombudsman in small disputes, reporting any incident and subsequent losses, recording births and deaths, outbreaks of any disease, taking care of Government property, reporting about antisocial elements, and many more important assignments. They are also responsible for the cleanliness of the villages and water bodies, reporting the performance of local bodies and upkeep of water bodies under various schemes. Similarly, Chowkidars are the eyes and ears of police and administration, providing first-hand information with the least expenses. The role of both of these is of much greater importance in terrorism-hit areas, as on-the-ground, timely updates are relevant for the administration to decide the future course of action. Methods are age-old but very significant in the present security and development scenario. The peacekeeper role of Lamberdar is of much significance to minorities; the Administration’s dependency on and impartial decision-making of Lamberdar are the building blocks of peace and prosperity in the villages. The Chief Secretary had rightly directed to remove non-performing Lamberdars and Chowkidars and fill all the vacant positions. Ten thousand educated youth have been appointed as Lamberdars and Chowkidars. In one go so many youth have got employment. Special training sessions have been imparted to make them well-versed in all of their duties and what is required of them. In this digital age, well-educated youth such as Lamberdars and Chowkidars is a bonus, and the use of WhatsApp for quick on-the-spot information transfer is the need of the hour. These ten thousand recruits will be the future game changers for the administration.
