EC for strict implementation of environment laws

JAMMU, Nov 19: Saying that it was consensus world over that development should not be at the cost of environment, the Chairman Committee on Environment of Legislative Assembly M. Y. Tarigami today urged for strict and effective implementation of environment laws and regulations, adding that stern action should be taken against industrial units not conforming to environmental guidelines.
Mr. Tarigami was speaking at a meeting of the Environment Committee convened today in the Central Hall of Assembly Complex to review Action Taken Reports by various departments on the recommendations of the EC regarding environment.
The panel also urged for use of modern technology in the industrial units to check pollution. He said it was the collective responsibility of all to ensure cleanliness of environment. The Committee also called for necessary corrective measures to check brick kilns and cement factories.
Legislators, Rashpaul Singh and Durga Dass attended the meeting and gave their valuable suggestions for further improvement in making the industrial units of the State pollution free. They suggested installation of pollution devices in and around the industrial units.
The meeting was informed that the J&K SIDCO on the recommendations of the Environment Committee of Legislative Assembly has appointed consultants for preparation of Detailed Project Report for establishing Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) in all the industrial estates in Jammu and Kashmir provinces.
Among others, Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce (I&C) Farooq Ahmad Faktoo, Labour Commissioner, Nirmal Shar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Wild Life Warden A. K. Singh, Regional Director Pollution Control Board Muzaffar Sajad, Deputy Commissioner, Samba R. K. Varma, Special Secretary Assembly M. R. Singh, Director I &C Jammu, G. A. Queshi, Director I & C Kashmir M. Javeed Khan, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kathua R. Sharma, Managing Director SIDCO M. Muajjan, Managing Director, J & I Javeed Iqbal and other officers of I & C and Assembly Secretariat were present in the meeting.
