GMC Baramulla doctors perform GIST excision on 45-yr-old woman

Srinagar, Apr 11: Something novel from the newly established Medical Colleges in Kashmir, the doctors at Associated Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla have performed a Laparoscopic Gastric Wall tumour (GIST) excision on a 45-year old female admitted to the hospital with the Endoscopic and CT Documented Gastric Wall tumour (GIST).
Officials said that the GIST excision was done by Dr Hakeem Vacar, Associate Professor, Surgery, Dr Mir Mushtaq, Consultant, Surgery with the Anaesthetic control of Dr Fayaz Munshi, Dr Tahira with the theatre support of Dr Basharat Saleem, HOD Anaesthesia.
The team, officials said, successfully performed laparoscopic gastric wall tumour excision, a procedure which is becoming increasingly common as medical technology advances and the process become more streamlined.
The GIST was diagnosed by Dr Zaffer Iqbal Kawoosa and referred to the Surgical department well in time. “Now such procedures (gastroenterology tumours) are being done on a routine basis and priority, keeping in view the nature of the disease. All the machinery equipment are in place for such procedures,” Medical Superintendent Associated Hospital, GMC Baramulla Dr Pervaiz Masoodi said, noting that the successful removal of the GIST is a testament to the skill and dedication of the medical team, who have demonstrated their ability to identify, diagnose and treat this type of tumour.
It is to be noted here that gastric wall tumours, or GISTs, are a type of cancerous growth which are found in the lining of the stomach and can be difficult to diagnose and treat.
