JAMMU, Apr 11: A team from the Jammu and Kashmir branch office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) today carried out a search at M/s New PP Jewellers in Batala, Gurdaspur, Punjab.
According to a press statement, during the search, it was discovered that the jeweller had been misusing BIS Hallmark on their jewellery, leading the team to seize around 389 grams of jewellery without BIS HUID marking. The violation of the BIS Act, 2016, carries severe penalties.
“The BIS Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office will take action against the offenders, and prosecution under the relevant provisions of the Act will be launched in the competent court of law,” reads the press statement.
“The Act specifies that such offenses are punishable by imprisonment of up to one year or a fine not less than Rs. 1 Lakh or both,” it reads.
Pertinently, to prevent the sale of fake jewellery without proper Hallmarking, the BIS has made it mandatory to use HUID on Gold Jewellery since 1st April 2023.
Through the press statement, the BIS has advised the public to verify the authenticity of gold jewellery before making a purchase by visiting the BIS website http:www.bis.gov.in or through the BIS Care App.
“Any misuse of Hallmark on gold jewellery should be reported to the Head of the Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office by email at jkbo@bis.gov.in or complaints@bis.gov.in, or by telephone at 0191-222690 or through the BIS Care App. The source of such information will be kept confidential,” reads the press statement.
