R S PURA, Apr 13: J&K Jatt Sabha today celebrated International Jatt Day here at their Headquarters in R S Pura town and remembered the contribution of the community in the Indian freedom struggle besides discussing their issues and demands.
The function was attended by President J&K Jatt Sabha and former Minister, S Manjit Singh; former Minister Sukhnandan Choudhary, Tarlok Singh Bajwa (Ex-MP). Ex- MLC Surinder Choudhary, Ex-MLC Vikram Randhawa, DDC Member Suchetgarh Taranjit Singh Tony, Corporator Dwarka Choudhary, DDC Member Geetu Randhawa, Kamal Choudhary and others.
On the occasion, Jatt Sabha also honoured the J&K Administrative Service officers from the community while appreciating their hard work.
While addressing the function, S Manjit Singh lamented the political, social, economical and educational backwardness of the Jatt community that had to migrate for three times at least from their respective places.
He said that the Govt of India had assured OBC status to the Jatt community in Jammu and Kashmir, but that too has not been fulfilled. Recalling the contribution of the Jatt community in the country, he said that Jatts have given their sacrifices before and after the independence of the country, but their contribution is always ignored and their genuine demand of political representation was not accepted.
“The Jatt community deserves reservation and political representation, but that was not done,” he added and announced to continue their struggle for the fulfillment of genuine demands.
He also highlighted the concerns of the Jatt community with regard to the armed forces recruitment under Agniveer scheme for four years of service in Indian Army. “Jatt youth mostly prefer joining the armed forces. However, the new recruitment scheme under Agniveer has not been welcomed by the youth as they would serve in the Army for only four years, and then they would have no job for the rest of their life,” he said.
Prominent among others, who spoke on the occasion, include, Sukhnandan Choudhary, T S Bajwa, Vikram Randhawa, Surinder Choudhary, Taranjit Singh Tony, Rashpal Choudhary, Sita Ram, Jarnail Choudhary, S Charan Singh, Ashok Choudhary, Tarsem Choudhary, Sukhjinder Pola and Surjeet Choudhary.
