NEW DELHI, Nov 22:
Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice, Justice Ajit Prakash Shah has taken over as the new Chairman of the Law Commission.
The post of the Chairman, 20th Law Commission had fallen vacant last month due to the resignation of Justice D K Jain, who has taken over as the President, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
Justice Shah (65) had started law practice in Solapur district court and shifted to the Bombay High Court in 1977.
He was appointed Additional Judge of Bombay High Court in December 1992 and became a Permanent Judge of the court in April 1994.
He assumed charge of the office of Chief Justice, Madras High Court in November 2005 and on transfer took over as Chief Justice, Delhi High Court in May 2008 and retired in February 2010.
He is known for his bold judgements, especially concerning social issues, including the July 2009 ruling which decriminalised homosexuality.
The 20th Law Commission was constituted with effect from September 1, 2012. It has a three-year term, ending on August 31, 2015. (PTI)
