Stolen AK-47 seized, suspect held

JAMMU, Nov 22: Police today arrested a suspect of Doda and recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine and 30 rounds from his possession, which he had stolen from the residential quarters of a police constable Rajinder Singh (No. 387-K), presently posted as Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Deputy Commissioner Excise (Lakhanpur) Mushtaq Ahmad.
Kathua police made the seizure and arrest from Lakhanpur in Kathua district.
The suspect, who had stolen the rifle and has now been arrested by the police, has been identified as Talib Hussain alias Raju son of Mohammad Anwar, a resident of village Sarsi in Doda district, who was working as a private agent at Lakhanpur, the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir.
SSP Kathua Mohan Lal said the AK-47 rifle along with one magazine and 30 rounds had been stolen by Talib Hussain from residential quarter of PSO Rajinder Singh at Lakhanpur in Kathua district on the intervening night of November 20 and 21.
Immediately after the constable reported the theft to Lakhanpur police station last evening, police swung into action and laid special nakas to nab the accused, Mr Lal said, adding several suspects were rounded up and finally Talib Hussain was detained and subjected to sustained interrogation during which he confessed the theft.
The SSP Kathua said police recovered the stolen AK-47 rifle along with magazine and ammunition this morning from a Nullah near Lakhanpur in early hours of this morning in the presence of Talib Hussain.
He said police have arrested Talib Hussain under Section 457, 387 RPC and 7/27 Arms Act. Talib was being quizzed to ascertain his past and links with the militants. He would be booked for militancy if it was established that he had stolen the rifle to hand it over to the militants.
Meanwhile, police have place constable Rajinder Singh under suspension for de-reliction of duty leading to theft of AK-47 rifle from his residential quarter.
